Waikiki Beach, Oahu Hawaii

Waikiki Beach is located in Waikiki, a neighborhood near Honolulu, Hawaii, on the south shore of Oahu. Waikiki Beach is well known for its white sand beachline that fronts the Waikiki neighborhood. The area was used as a retreat for Hawaiian royalty who enjoyed surfing on traditional longboards.

Waikiki beach hosts many events each year, from surfing competitions to outdoor performances, Hula performances, and outrigger canoe races. The beach itself is known for its views of the tuff cone of Diamond Head, and is usually warm and cloud free. The surf at Waikiki is known for its rolling breaks which make it ideal for longboards, tandem surfing and for the beginning surfer to learn on. Waikiki Beach has had numerous problems with erosion due to the ocean tides.

There have been many ventures for beach replenishment. In the 1920's and 30's sand was imported on barges from Manhattan Beach, California. The importing of sand stopped in the 1970's. A partial restoration was completed in 2012, the project imported sand from nearby shoals, and widened a 1,700 foot section by 37 feet, restoring the beach line to the 1985 shoreline levels.
