Makapu'u State Wayside and Lighthouse Trail

The State Wayside is the part of Makapu'u that includes Makapu'u Head and the Makapu'u Lighthouse. There is a paved road that is open to foot traffic only and will lead mostly towards the lighthouse. The trail is roughly just less than two miles long and rises up along the land side of the ridge and curves around the southern edge of the ridge.

The trail then traverses along the ridge and towards the lighthouse itself which is closed to the public. You can then continue on a trail that leads to the former Coast Guard residential area up to the summit. Once up to the summit you will be able to see the islands of Molokai, and Lana'i when you look across the Kaiwi Channel. On days that are exceptionally clear you may be able to see the island of Maui. One point of interest for visitors is the fact that during the months between November to April, there is a good chance that you may see Humpback Whales offshore. There is also a telescope at the summit available for public use.
