Diamond Head in Waikiki

Diamond head is one of Hawaii's most recognized landmarks. Diamond Head is also a United States Monument. It is known around the world by its symmetrical shape and relevance to Waikiki. The Diamond Head Crater is a volcanic tuff cone on the island of Oahu, and its english name was given by British sailors in the 1800's who mistook the calcite deposits for diamonds.

Aerial View of Diamond Head:

The hike up to the rim of the crater is .75 miles, or 1.1 Km in length and takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours to complete. The hike itself is not overly difficult, however it is mostly unpaved and winds over loose gravel. The hike goes up 74 steps, then through a tunnel and up 99 steps, through a small lighted tunnel, up a narrow spiral staircase that is 43 steps to a coastal artillery platform. This view is a breathtaking view that allows you to see both Waikiki, and the Pacific Ocean in great detail.
